So we decided to hire a car over the weekend to get out and do some touring around Melbs and we’re very glad that we did.
Fuelled for the day we took off along the Esplanade/Beach Rd in the direction of Mornington. The drive down follows the edge of the bay past Sandringham, Brighton, Frankston before turning inland as the Nepean Hwy for the run into Mornington. From Mornington it’s back onto the Esplanade along the waters edge for the most scenic part of the journey through (amongst others) Mt Martha, Dromana, Rye, Blairgowrie, Sorrento and onto Portsea.
The last three on that list were probably our favourites for the day: Portsea for the lovely old beach houses and the windswept trees, reminded me of Leura - by the sea; Sorrento for the undulating backstreets between the sheltered port-side to the rugged ocean-side; and Blairgowrie for the pier and the camping grounds along for foreshore; still looks to be one of the most relaxing holidays around, we’re definitely going to look into spending some downtime there next year. An honorable mention also to Dromana for the bathing huts along the beach.
Ended up having a late lunch in a Sorrento café before getting back on the road for the return journey into Melbourne, Nellie taking a sightseeing detour through the back streets around Brighton/St Kilda before heading up to Lygon St for dinner.
238 km travelled
